20 August 2025
It’s the start of a new week and here’s a little round up of some recent goings on in Petalon-land.
Heatwave hiccups
We love a bit of sunshine, but it’s no lie that the weather we’ve been having isn’t a flower’s best friend. Our second succession of sunflowers took a bit of a hit with the recent heatwave, so we had to do a quick re-sowing.
Seed saving
We’re doing lots of seed saving of crops such as poppies, orlaya, cynoglossum and tanacetum. This sustainable practice makes seeds more resilient to our climate but if we’ve naturally grown any unique colours we love it means we can save those seeds to try and capture them again.
Beaten a personal best
We’re now into our eleventh week using only flowers we have grown ourselves. So far that’s two weeks longer than last year and we’re not stopping yet!
Still to come…
More sunflowers (hopefully not in a heatwave!) chrysanthemums, scabious, rudbeckia and a second flush of cosmos. Our drying room is also filling up nicely, with other crops still to harvest so we can continue to offer homegrown flowers once the season ends.
