8 January 2026
As any florist will know, as soon as January arrives thoughts turn to Valentine’s Day, followed just a month later this year by Mother’s Day. As such, we’re getting ahead on a few things on the farm to stand us in good stead before the two busiest months of the year arrive.
We’ve had a busy start to 2026, clearing and prepping flower beds for planting, which is a important task that we’ll have less time to do between Valentine’s and Mother’s Day madness.
Despite the cold snap – snow, in Cornwall?! – we’ve had no casualties as we used frost cloths for our over-wintered seedlings to keep them warm. We’ve also got nightlights for our winter sown crops to extend the amount the light the seedlings get in winter.
We are still dividing dahlia tubers, which can rot if left in the ground. Last year the whole patch got attacked by bindweed, so we are moving them, dividing them to multiply our stock and stop the tubers getting too congested and throwing out any that have disease. It is incredibly time consuming but worth it.
Quite remarkably, we’ve had a handful of really early poppies blooming already which brought a smile to everyone’s face and has made us excited for the season to come. We’re always looking for ways to get flowers to bloom earlier in the year but this was pretty unexpected!
