British Flowers vs Imported

Seasons change, and so do our flowers

This year we had a 14-week sending streak of 100% homegrown flowers in every single product we sent out, saving 1.6 tonnes of CO2 compared to using only imported flowers of the same period. That’s about 6 months of electricity use for an average UK household.

We make no secret of the fact that it’s not possible to offer British flowers all year round because of the climate we live in – if we could, we absolutely would.

Dried Selection Boxes for your home

We think of our homegrown flower content as a sliding scale throughout the year:

  • March, April, May – early season: A limited supply of British flowers from our farm – some single varieties (like poppies) become available.
  • June, July, August – peak season: A wide range of homegrown products available, as well as Signature Bouquets that feature all British flowers at its peak.
  • September, October – late season: a decreasing supply of British flowers from our farm. Late summer flowers (like chrysanthemums) available in single variety boxes and possibly a few British flowers in our Signature Bouquets until all crops are finished.
  • November to February – out of season: We import flowers from where they grow plentifully through winter for our year-round Signature Bouquets.

To keep you aware, we label all our products to show what quantity of homegrown flowers are contained.

Importing flowers is still a vital part of Petalon through the winter…

Despite this, we are in fact enormously carbon negative anyway (positive?! whichever one is good).

We achieve this by continuing to plant 1000’s of trees on our farm, as well as developing our regenerative agriculture practices that have taken nearly 70 acres of farmland, previously used for a fairly bleak form of factory farming, and turned it into a vibrant ecosystem.
