More Tree Planting

Last week we planted another 1200 trees on our farm. We did so through surprisingly mild, September-like days, as well as through 65mph winds and horizontal rain – cheers Storm Bram. One plus to the rain though is that it does make the spade go in to the soil much easier, so every cloud and all that. Rain clouds in this case.

We’re planting some orchard belts and some foliage rows, which will form tram lines through our fields. These will provide shelter for the fields in future (from aforementioned 65mph winds) but they’ll also provide cut foliage for us to use in our bouquets. We’re also planting copses, or small groups of trees, in one of our fields which will eventually be usable for wood fuel and for animals such as sheep and cows to graze from the lower branches of once they’re more mature (the trees, not the animals). Big trees such as oaks and Scots pine will form shelter belts around the outside of our top fields, essentially forming a ring of protective trees around our farm (and hopefully some new housing for various wildlife).
